The hub of the imperial capital Zhongguancun
This time in Beijing, I still chose to stay at Beijing Friendship Hotel located at No.1 Zhongguancun South Street, Haidian District.
Subway travel is the ace here. Walk out from the east gate of the hotel and walk about 400 meters (measured 5-7 minutes) to the southwest exit of Exit D at Renmin University Station on the Daxing Line of Metro Line 4. Line 4 is like a fairy line: go south for two or three stops to the National Library and switch to Line 9 to go to Beijing West Station, or take the bus directly to Beijing South Station; A few stops north to reach the Yuanmingyuan and Summer Palace directly; Walking towards the city, transferring to Line 1 in Xidan can lead directly to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. If you are coming from the Capital International Airport, the airport bus line 4 (Princess Tomb Line) actually has a direct stop at the "Friendship Hotel Station", where you can get off and walk a few steps into the lobby, which is extremely friendly to guests dragging large luggage. Beijing South Station, Beijing West Station, and Beijing Station can also be easily reached through Line 4 or a few transfers.
The surrounding facilities are filled with the "Haidian temperament". The hotel is adjacent to Renmin University of China, across from Beijing Institute of Technology, and outside the north gate is the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, creating an academic atmosphere shrouded in smoke and fire. Within a radius of 10 to 15 minutes' walk, Shuang'an Shopping Mall and Huayu Fashion Shopping Center are clustered together. Anyone who wants to eat high-end food can find it in the mall. If you want a down-to-earth atmosphere, go to Weigong Village next to it - it is a famous "university food corridor" in Beijing, where Xinjiang rice, Korean ingredients, and old Beijing copper pots are all available. If you are too lazy to walk, there are bus stops such as "Friendship Hotel" or "Sitongqiao West" for bus routes 26, 651, 320, etc. next to the hotel wall. You can easily get to Zhongguancun Square or along the Third Ring Road without any congestion anxiety.
I have been living in the garden for the past few days, and I particularly enjoy strolling around the area in the morning and evening. Riding a shared bike to the west for about 10 minutes will bring you some peace and quiet to Dahui Temple, while taking a stroll to the east will lead you into the campus tree lined avenue of Renmin University. The sense of balance between hustle and bustle is well grasped: during the day, taking the subway instantly immerses oneself in the fast-paced city, and at night, walking through the antique hotel gate, one can immediately switch back to a relaxed vacation mode.
If choosing a hotel is about selecting a type of travel efficiency, then the score given by Beijing Friendship Hotel is relatively high. It doesn't have any fancy gimmicks, but when you drag the box and see the familiar green plant sign at Exit D of Renmin University Station, knowing that you can lie flat in a few minutes and there will be direct trains to wherever you go tomorrow, that sense of security is the most valuable way to get back the house price.A Garden Secret Realm Through Seventy Years of Time
This time I came to Haidian, Beijing to do some business and deliberately avoided those generic chain hotels, choosing Beijing Friendship Hotel. This old state guesthouse, which was built in 1954 and designed by the architectural master Zhang Liu, has a fatal appeal to someone like me who prefers a historical feel.
Get out of Exit D of Renmin University Station on Metro Line 4 and walk for a few minutes to see the grand entrance of the hotel. At the moment of entering the gate, the outside noise seemed to be isolated by an invisible wall. In the 220000 square meter park, towering ancient trees and lush greenery make it a rare "urban oasis" within the Third Ring Road, with over 60000 square meters of green space. On both sides of the main road are a group of buildings with strong ethnic characteristics. The green glazed tiles with flying eaves and ridges emit a warm light in the sunshine. The Friendship Palace stands in the center, and the Jingbin Building, Yingbin Building, and other buildings are symmetrically distributed in a fan-shaped pattern. The solemnity and elegance of the "new ethnic style" of the 1950s is a confidence that no new style hotel can imitate.
I checked into Jingbin Building, and the front desk handled the procedures meticulously and thoughtfully. They also gave me a fan with the hotel logo and a refrigerator sticker as gifts. The room does have what guests often refer to as a "vintage feel". The furniture is not minimalist modern style, but a steady wooden tone with a hint of Su style. Although the facilities are not brand new, they are kept clean and tidy. The bedding is soft and fluffy, and the sound insulation is good in old buildings. You can sleep soundly all night until dawn. If you pursue the ultimate modern intelligent experience, you may feel a bit outdated, but if you understand some architectural history, you will actually fall in love with this sense of sedimentation.
The most unforgettable thing for me is the afternoon garden stroll. The Su Garden in the hotel is a secret realm built in imitation of the Suzhou Netmaster Garden, with white walls and black tiles, winding paths and corridors, small bridges and flowing water. Under the scorching sun of northern Beijing, it exudes a touch of Jiangnan's gentleness. Walking slowly along the rural and elegant gardens, you can see many guests drinking tea and chatting under the shade of trees, and even walking their dogs on the lawn. This relaxed lifestyle is extremely difficult to see in business hotels. I heard that in the early years, Soviet experts were received here, and there are still some traces of a combination of Chinese and Western elements in the garden. Walking in it, it seems like you can feel the warmth of China's foreign affairs exchanges.
In terms of catering, I tried a buffet breakfast in the restaurant of the main building. The old Beijing sugar Youbing (Deep-fried round and flat dough-cake) and freshly cooked noodles are authentic, and western food is also standard. The only small regret is that the park is too large. It takes about ten minutes to walk from the VIP building to Su Garden. In the summer, it can be a bit physically demanding when exposed to the sun. It is recommended that friends who are visiting for the first time obtain a guide map at the front desk or choose a room type close to the target building to book.
Beijing Friendship Hotel is not as flashy as a luxury hotel, but it uses seventy years of grass, wood, bricks, and tiles to house something called 'stability'. If you come to Beijing and want to find a place where you can stay for a few nights amidst the hustle and bustle, with stories to tell, this place is definitely worth adding to your list.
